Title: 2019-20 FNHL Overpaid Players (Playoff Edition)

I'm wondering if there's a reason there's a smaller list of MOST OVERPAID PLAYERS in FNHL.

But here's my attempt at bringing it back for the 2019-20 season. Being the owner of the most OVERPAID player, I think that honour belongs to me. :rofl:

I've cut and paste this from the 2015-16 post started by Pigsrule and will use it as a evolving post. After the Sharks players, the list is in no particular order.

  • :SJ: LW/RW - Thomas Vanek, $1.6m (2019-2022) - a slow footed FA who refuses to retire at age 36
  • :ANA: D - Damon Severson, $6.0m (2018-2022) - plays like a bottom pairing D
  • :ANA: G - Alex Lyon, $3.6m (2018-2021) - does this guy even have a real shot at the NHL?
  • :CLG: D - Ryan McDonagh, $5.3m (2017-2020) - plays like a 7th or 8th D
  • :CLG: G - Ryan Miller, $7.1m (2017-2021) - retirement material?
  • :LAK: D - Derek Forbort, $3.5m (2018-2021) - not producing even when he's not on on the IR

  • :NYR: RW - Phil Kessel, $4.5m (2019-2022) - how the mighty have fallen!
  • :NYR: G - Cam Talbot, $8.9m (2019-2024) - too expensive for a backup
  • :PIT-NHL: RW - Tyler Pitlick, $2.7m (2019-2022) - overpaid for a depth guy

Kessel has been bad this year but that contract isn't all that bad imo. Talbot has improved by stealing starts in Calgary and might be creeping into the 1B role with his play since the new year. As for Josh Anderson, without a doubt #1 and way ahead of anyone in FNHL for consideration of that distinction.

6. :CLG: D - Ryan McDonagh, $5.3m (2017-2020) - plays like a 7th or 8th D

I see from the Completed Transactions that McDonagh was a Cane and dealt for a 2nd rounder to the Flames. I give props to the last owner for that trade. McDonagh lost his PP1 unit PT to Shattenkirk and the results speak for themselves. He is no better than a shutdown defenceman as long as Tampa doesn't give him PP mins.

That $8 million Johnny Boychuk contract looks like a giant anchor to me. Was that from a FA bidding war or an expensive contract extension.

I will volunteer this guy for the list because he might've been a Free Agent bidding war beneficiary
Blake Coleman, $7.0m (2018-2022)

Once he went north of 6.9m he was overpaid.

Coleman has the track record to back up that large contract so I'm not sure he's really deserving of attention of the overpaid list. Just my 2 cents.

I agree and dealt a 2nd rounder to get his big contract to Calgary where I think he will bounce back a little next season.

He's got a cap hit of $6.75 million thru 2025-26 in Tampa and Shattenkirk is on a 1yr deal for $1.75m after getting bought out by NYR. McDonagh is 30yo while Shattenkirk is 31. I'm hedging a bet that Ryan gets his PP1 playing time back next year or shortly thereafter.

So for now, I agree McDonagh is overpaid but I don't think it will be for the longrun though he's got an extension coming his way so we'll see once the NHL takes it's finger off the pause button.
