Franchise GM: Completed Trades / Angels/Cardinals Trade 11-21-18 10:20 pm ET

The Cards and Angels have come to an agreement, sending:

From Angels:
Dansby Swanson $500k (P-2020)
Sean Manaea $500k (P-2019)
Sheldon Neuse $500k (P-n/a)

From Cards:
Yasmani Grandal $4M (2020)
x $4M in 2019 and 2020
Jonathon Loaisiga $500k (P-n/a)

Angels are in a win-now mode and needed a solid C for their 2019 run and Grandal fits that bill. With Manaea's injury leaving his 2019 season in question, I felt the roster space was important to free up considering I have Montgomery out for the year as well. Dansby is my 3rd MI behind Correa and Torres and while he's making progress and hasn't nearly peaked yet, he wouldn't get a ton of playing time, barring injuries. Neuse is blocked by even more options at CI. Angels are giving up a lot of control and upside in this deal, and required a young top 100 spec in return in Loaisiga to balance things out a bit. Finally, getting the Cards to eat the remaining salary on Grandal's contract allows us to fill a hole in our line up while also maintaining some flexibility to do things in FA.

In order to accommodate the roster spots needed for the completion of the Longoria deal, please release:

Jose Ramirez (2018) $1M

Ramirez's buy out:

2018 - $1M x 75% = $750k rounded up to $1M

$1M x 1.1 = $1.1M rounded up to $1.5M

Bruce Rondon (2019) $1.5M

Rondon's buy out:

2018 - $1.5M x 75% = $1.125M rounded to nearest $500k increment = $1M
2019 - $1.5M x 50% = $750k rounded to nearest $500k increment = $1M

$2M x 1.1 = $2.2M rounded up to $2.5M. I would like to accelerate the entirety of the $2.5M buy out into the 2018 salary cap.

All told, both releases should result in just a $4M cap hit to 2018.

Angels trade:
CI Longoria, Evan, $15.5m (2021)
X-Longoria, Evan, Cash Exchange, $15.5m in 2018
X-Longoria, Evan, Cash Exchange, $5.5m in 2019
X-Longoria, Evan, Cash Exchange, $5.5m in 2020
X-Longoria, Evan, Cash Exchange, $5.5m in 2021

For the Angels, this deal is about freeing up $10M a year for the next 3 years to help with extending our core players. As a Rays fan, I hope Longo gets back to his 30+ HR days, as he's only 1 healthy season removed from that...and he's shown a lot of bounce back capability during his career. In return I receive a two controllable RP's to replace a couple of dumpster fires I've had in those roster spots this year. Maldonado is simply a back-up that I don't expect a lot from...but he might have a little upside if he benefits from additional playing time in Houston.
