Title: Off-Season Game Plan: FNHL Flames
Post by: jackdaniels on June 08, 2014, 02:18:36 PM
The Calgary Flames :CLG: were a league owned franchise until late January when maverick owner Jack "Hand me the bottle" Daniels purchased the struggling team for 20 Dollars. At the time the Flames were not in a Playoff spot.

The Flames season ended at the hands of FNHL Stanley Cup Finalist St. Louis. :STL-NHL: in the first round of the Playoffs.

Here's a look at the future of the Calgary team and possible moves the team will make during the offseason.

Calgary has a bright future with Nathan MacKinnon, Chris Kreider, Ryan Callahan, Luke Schenn and Jonathan Bernier forming young core of the team with Ryan Strome waiting to be called up to the parent team next year. Beyond those fivelayers the skill level drops off quickly.

The team bought out many regular roster players with the new owner looking to clean house for a quick rebuild during the summer. 31 Buy outs were made by the Flames by the end of the yr including Ilya Bryzgalov, $5.4m (2013-2016) - ABO due to his large $13.7 Million contract. Once contracts roll over and the buyouts come off the books Calgary will have up to $26.4 Million to play with on top of the $7.6 Million the team currently has in cap space.

Top scorers in 2013-14
Bernier 356.25
Bryzgalov 169.5
MacKinnon 168.9
Callahan 139.1
Kreider 125.8

The farm wystem may not produce any serviceable players until 2015-16 beyond Strome. These players appear to be the most ready though

Top prospects on the Alberta Grizzlies :BOS-NHL2:
D - Slater Koekkoek (2012: 1/10 - 0 Games)
C - Tanner Richard (2012: 3/71 - 0 Games)
D - Matt Pelech (2005: 1/26 - 7 Games)
C - Mattias Janmark-Nylen (2013: 3/79 - 0 Games)
C - Chandler Stephenson (2012: 3/77 - 0 Games)

If the Flames are to rebuild quickly it will be through FA and the trade route both of which the owner has shown to have a midas touch. With upwards of $37 Million to spend to fill 12 of 30 active roster spots, 6 draft picks and an owner that likes to stay busy and involved, Calgary is expected to be a very active team this offseason!

:iatp: The Flames needed a good owner to step in and revamp the roster. It's good to have some strong competition in the Pacific Division.

Good plan. Now I can't wait to see how the plan unfolds starting in August.

Jack, you've been reading too many Scott Cullen articles. Don't go spending all your hard earned cash in one place.  :P
