Discussion: Extensions values relative to Cap

Its true. 

I was thinking it would be a good idea for league play to set in stone how the league will handle future changes in NHL cap.  Will we continue the trend of increasing teams caps without adjusting the extension values?  Will we adjust cap and extension values to continue mirroring the NHL?  Or just let things stay status quo from year to year.

Not sure what you mean Snug since this league didn't increase the cap this yr. In fact it's down a crap load.

I think the extension values are fine since they're still similar to real NHL salaries at the high end. At the low they're still a crapshoot but that's what makes fantasy interesting.

my point was that in the past the league has increased and decreased the cap with the nhl but never increased the extension cost to mimic the cap.  if we are inceasing the cap and not the extension values it would change my strategies

I suppose if we went with your approach someone would need to update the ext values annually. There doesn't seem to be those kinds of owners around.

Anywho doesn't free agency already inject enough salary variance into the mix here? At least I think that's what you're looking for here or maybe I'm pissing on the wrong target. Don't know about you but the more complex you make fantasy sports the less engaged teams will be over the long haul. But that's just an old fart's couple of pennies. LOL

Nah, i actually like stability when it comes to caps mainly because i like to plan. 

As for the increase/decrease you could do it all by a percentage up or down.

I guess my main issue was the previous 3 seasons you saw the cap increase without a increase in the extensions cost.  Doing that made the decision to extend players way too easy since there was too much money floating around and then there is still remnants of contracts from the FA that followed Ie.  guys getting 8, 9, 10 mill a year

I actually really like our current cap to extension costs now that it has been scaled back.  Its at a good ratio that teams have to make tough decision when it comes to extending players. 

If we stick to the old way of increasing cap without adjusting the extension costs accordingly it kind of cheapens the strategy in doing extensions and creates very weak free agency.   

My preference has always been to find a good cap number and just stick to it year to year.

I gott say if we make two moving parts to the salary cap versus extension values equation the caveman in us will come out and we'll be left scratching our heads and throwing our hands up in neanderthal disgust.

But I see what you're getting at about watered down FA although I don't think that was an issue around here in the past.

In those leagues yes definitely easy extensions and watered down FA. That's why I won't play other leagues. They're not deep and have cheap contracts. Not challenging enough for my fantasy playtime. LOL

ya, some of those leagues are going up this year because they announce their cap 1 year early so teams can plan their strategy.  So they had already increased it and it will take the big dive next season. 

The free agency from the past is a little misleading in that there were inactive teams that had let their minor leagues or FA's walk when any active GM would have extended them.

Didn't the league resign expiring contracts for a bunch of inactive teams last yr. That's what I recall when I joined last Fall.

Man we have to find more guys like us who aren't afraid of making moves. LOL
