Guess you see the logic behind the trade - Aho and Rantanen (my fellow Finns BTW) are basically a 1-to-1 switch, and I pay here some premium in order to receive one season with a cap friendly term.

This is most likely just one trade in a series of up and coming ones. We are willing to move any player in the right deal.

Carolina Confirms:

I have too many good players that are only RW eligible so this solves one of those issues. I also pick up a couple of assets for taking on the extra salary. Didn't really want to trade Rantanen but you have to give to get and I believe this trade improves Carolina both long term and short term.

We worked on this trade all summer and it finally came to fruition right before the deadline. Thanks Johnny for the good trade talks and good luck to your Islanders.

Good hockey trade. Give the advantage to the Islanders for this season, given Rantanen has one year left on his low cap deal. Long-term this will likely come down to how that 50th overall works out for the Canes.
