I'm guessing that after the fall to #4 the Avs will now select a D-man...

Aren't the top-5 guys all forwards/centres tho?

I think the Avs might have to go the Oilers route and trade a nice forward for an ok D - like Hall for Larsson.
Matt Duchene for .... One of the Flyers' many talented young D?

Wow, draft lottery results make our Supp draft more interesting.

#1 and #3 overall picks will be in the draft pool (barring trading of this picks from NJ or DAL)

Sucks for Snug (as if he needed the extra help) and whoever had the Canucks draft picks (can't keep track of it - NYR maybe?)

Papps comes out the big winner for sure with his Flyers picking up one of Patrick or Hischier

Mother Russia wants him and Markov, Kulikov and even Ovechkin to defect to the KHL.  But I haven't heard anything about him making that decision.

Radulov is only  on a 1-year deal tho.... Free Agent after the playoffs.

The other Russians would have to duck out of their contracts and piss off their teams / the NHL.

Should be fun to watch.

At leas Papps gets to relieve himself of Radulov's contract if he leaves haha

Isn't Radulov signing in the KHL after this season so he can play in the Olympics next year? Haha

For example, this year, some of us will probably dip into the players from the 2016, 2015 and maybe even the 2014 draft clBooYah!  were maybe 3rd or 4th rounders, but have had solid years in their last Junior season or 2nd or 3rd NCAA season.

So we can't write out the word "c l a s s" anymore?

Haha that's hilarious... Over-sensitive much?

I don't think it will harm future drafts all that much.

I say this because each year obviously there is a new crop of rookie draftees from the NHL, but also each year we know more about players who were passed over from last year's draft.
For example, this year, some of us will probably dip into the players from the 2016, 2015 and maybe even the 2014 draft clBooYah!  were maybe 3rd or 4th rounders, but have had solid years in their last Junior season or 2nd or 3rd NCAA season.
I mean, last year I landed Kevin Labanc and I only knew about him because he led the OHL in scoring. He was a 6th round pick in 2014. I'm pretty sure he was on exactly zero people's supp-draft radar up until about April/May of last year.

Add to that the growing amount of NHL teams signing un-drafted NCAA free agents, and there is plenty of pretty good talent to be drafted each year for our supp draft.
Oh, and the fact we get 3 keeper players each year from our own team as well.

I still think some teams will have to drop players if they accumulate several draft picks in a year. If a team has say, 5-6 draft picks from trades (their 3 plus 2-3 more acquired ones), that gives them 9 prospects to house in their minors that year. I don't see more than 2 of those 9 playing in the NHL the following year, so those 7+ others will still all be there the following season, with an additional 6 or so incoming prospects.

That's my thoughts anyways. I think 15 is the max though - been in leagues with 20 spots and that was definitely way too many. Zero tough decisions had to be made with that many spots to stash players.

We're gonna have a hell of a bidding war for top free agents between Calgary and Vegas the way Slack has been cleaning cap space! Should be interesting, haha

In a different league I am in, for Basketball, there is an interesting twist to "RFA" players.

For any player with an expiring contract that is deemed an "RFA" there is a separate "RFA Bidding" season, which happens before regular FA season.

For the RFA bidding, any team in the league can bid on the players, it is the exact same as FA. At the end of the bid (48 hours, or whatever the timeframe), the team that owns the RFA has the choice to match the bid or let the winning bidding team have the player.
However, there is draft pick compensation attached to the bid amount.
That is something that would have to be figured out for our league.

Probably something along the lines of the extensions:
Quote
Salary - Max Years
$5m+ - 5 years (the overall limit)
$3.5 to $4.9m - 4 years
$2 to $3.4m - 3 years
$0 to $1.9m - 2 years

If the per-year value of the bid is over $5m, then you surrender a 1st Round Pick
If the per-year value is between say, $3.0 and $4.9m, then you surrender a 2nd Round Pick
If the per-year value is under $3.0m, then it's a 3rd round pick

The interesting thing is though, is that this RFA bidding happens before the rookie draft (in our case it would be the supplemental).
So the team that owns the RFA can choose to take this year's 1st round pick, knowing which position the team is drafting in, or they can take the 2018 1st round pick if they choose.
The only stipulation though is that the bidding team must have the draft picks for compensation RFA bidding in the next 2 years. As in, 2019 picks wouldn't count for compensation purposes.
Since we all get our 2019 picks after the season, it means any team would easily be able to bid in RFA. But those 2019 picks are so far away, they aren't really all that valuable - it's so far away.
So if a team doesn't have a 1st rounder in 2017 or 2018, they wouldn't be able to bid on RFA's over the $5m threshold.
I think there is also a rule that if say your bid is in the $3m-$4.9m range and you don't have any 2nd rounders in the next 2 years but have a 1st, then the team can choose to take your 1st.

It's kind the same as the NHL in terms of, if you don't have the correct compensation draft picks available, you can't make an RFA offer sheet to a player.
(Trust me, I've tried numerous times on NHL 17, and 16 and 15 and 14 etc etc... and it doesn't allow you to make RFA bids if you've traded away the corresponding draft picks to the dollar amount of the offer sheet, haha).

The only thing for our league is to determine which players are considered RFA's...
I think we already said the players that have P-n/a contracts are exempt from all of this.
It just becomes a matter of if ALL expiring contracts are available for RFA or how that would happen.
Because if ALL expiring contracts are available, then there would almost be no extensions to do. Which might be good, might be bad, who knows.

If a player has multiple positions, the contract must be equal to, or greater than, the higher salary of the positions.

It's not the highest rank you're looking for, but the highest salary.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but...
Just a heads up, those dual position guys will be more than you originally thought.

C/LW Johan Larsson, RFA, $0m this year
2015-2016    C:125   LW: 115
125th C is $2.2m per

C/LW Rickard Rakell, RFA - Discount Eligible, $m this year
2016-2017    C: 18     LW: 17
18th C is $6.7m per (x 70% = $4.7m per)

RW/LW Michael Grabner, RFA, $0m this year
2016-2017     LW: 38        RW: 36
38th LW is $3.8m per

It sucks, I know.
It's awesome to have the 2 position guys for Fantrax during the season, but it sucks balls when you have to re-sign them to the higher dollar value for their position.
