Title: Discussion: Increase MiLR 40 game limit
Post by: ripper on November 11, 2013, 07:04:41 PM
I vote to increase games played in the farm to 80 for players and 50 for goalies. Some sort of increase would need to take place to increase the base salary minimum.

Good discussion

Ripper, I split this post from the thread RE minimum salary value because it's a good discussion to open up.

I like the idea of increasing the games played cap for MiLR players from 40 to 80, 82... something lower for goalies, sure.

it will help boost the value of draft picks even more... or not since there are a limited number of MiLR spots and by holding  players until they reach 80 somewhat games played, teams would end up with overflowing MiLRs and purge draftees or move draft picks on the cheap... interesting.

what do people think about increasing MiLR games played limit?

I'd like to see the limit increased like Rip but after reading Pigs rationale I'm thinking that domino effect would be bad.

How about another option of doing away with MiLR games played limit and you call up whenever you want to since you drafted the prospect as an investment. Teams would have to decide to promote as soon as their MiLR gets too crowded or in the case of the :ANA:'s and :PHI-NHL:'s of the league with only 6 prospects in the minors they can take their time before calling up players. Teams will naturally promote a player as soon as they play regularly and produce points consistently. And would make prospects more valuable because they can be stashed as long as you need for teams with full active rosters.

The current 40 game limit forces some players to get called up way before they're ready which hurts draft pick value if you think about it.

ok, looks like Ripper beat me too it as I posted this exact suggestion in the other post.  I disagree on the domino effect because its not about letting every one of your minors hit 80games before promoting them,  its more about waiting until they can become productive nhl players for your team.  some do that in 10 games, others take 110 games.  80 games does three things.  1) allows you to properly evaluate a player before making that decision 2) allows teams the flexibility that if they have a 30 man team already they wont be force into a drop mid season.  3) addresses a flaw in the original rules that inadvertently devalues draft picks.

I still think the change to players min salary is unnecessary since market has and will always dictated player values.  It's not a bad idea, but its also not a good idea.  Changes in league rules should only be done with the idea of directly addressing a flaw in the original rule set.  I would run the metrics through and through before considering a change like this.

With the league moving to a paid league, these rule changes should and need to be ironed out this season so you guys can have smooth running year to year with very little adjustments.

Nothing's broken so why try to fix anything? In fact things have been running smoothly year over year.

I say leave good enough alone guys!

I say leave it alone also. I know I had to limit my spending significantly, because I had a few guys that had to be called up or I would of lost them. This would be a very re-active move IMO.

Fair enough.

Any more team owners want to input on this topic?

Old topic that we should dust off for the off-season.

I'm still good with 40 games.

Of course we might have to bump up the size to 25 MiLR spots in a yr or 2. That will keep the value of draft picks up.

If we bump up the games, we will have to bump up the milr size too cause more players will be living there for a little longer.

i think the biggest issue we have is we have no two way contracts. Because of that, I think it would be a good idea to try 60/40 games so we can really see where the specs are at. I think it would help teams that are filled.

:iatp:

I like the thinking.
The speedbump will be that PR didn't want to change the max games for goalies relative to skaters. Keeps tracking straight forward and one less detail for new owners to tune into.

I prefer it capped at 40 as it is. My thinking is that with less opportunity for dynasty teams to hoard young talent that improves the speed at which other teams can rebuild. Simply put, the more talent that is available in free-agency the better.

Considering how there are few free agents available, I think this line of thinking is proper for this league. Keeping the games at 40 and the milr size at 20 will force teams to make decisions that they would prefer not to make, thus adding more free agents.
