As many of you know, FGM has been "wrestling" with the issue of RP values. More specifically, updating the Salary Extension Scale for RPs so that it is more in line with their value. There are a number of things intertwined in this issue:
1) Fair market value;
2) Point values being inflated by players who are SP/RPs; and
3) Type A and Type B Compensation for RPs.
As a league, we have not been able to come up with a viable solution and it seems to continually get swept aside "as something to deal with in the future". I have been in FGM since 2010 and the Extension Values for all players has not been updated as far as I can tell. So, as a starting point, I initially addressed RPs in a post earlier this season. I tried a variety of things and consulted a variety of sources. So even though I have not posted anything on this issue since March 4, 2015, I have continued researching this issue in order to come up with something we can use in FGM.
During the course of my career as a classroom teacher, I found myself "pirating" and "tweaking" other people's ideas and lessons for the benefit of my students. The old saying that there is no reason to re-invent the wheel can be applied to our situation here in FGM. I have scoured the many leagues here on ProFSL, and throughout the fantasy world, to see if I could find something that could be applied to our league. Sometimes the most obvious of solutions are right in front of you, and for whatever reasons, they cannot be seen.
I know that several GMs in this league are also members of Moneyball. I looked at the extension values for Moneyball and compared them to what we use in FGM. In doing so, it became clear to me that all the work I had done before was simply an excercise in spinning my wheels. Here was a scale that could be used very effectively in FGM with a few of the tweaks and modifications I spoke of earlier. In FGM, we use increments of $0.5m whereas Moneyball uses increments of $0.1m, so I had to adjust the scale to meet our needs. I used the 2014 rankings for RPs and left off players are classified as SPs by there teams. For example, Yusmeiro Petit, although designated as a SP/RP, is utilized primarily as a RP by his MLB team, so I took those factors into account. On the scale, I listed the Current FGM Value for a given slot on the right had side to give you an idea of the modification involved.
With that, here's what I came up with, and even though there are some other things I would propose to go along with these modifications, I believe it's a starting point for something that could work for us. Please look it over, think about it, and comment whether you believe we can use this in FGM.
