Google Sheet Thing
« on: November 23, 2020, 01:21:48 PM »
Not a huge fan of the google sheets in-lieu of profsl rosters but I'll adapt. One change for the better would be to stop projecting prospect contracts (p/na) ahead for 4 years at $500k. It really muddies the at-a-glance view. Would be better if when I look at the 2024/25 column (for example) I only see actual contract commitments, not place-holder numbers.

What would be the suggested alternative way?

Simply fill in the current year with the $0.5 placeholder! Roll that forward one year at a time until the prospect is released or signed to a 5 year discounted pro-contract.

C   n/a   Nick Suzuki         $0.5   $0.5   $0.5   $0.5   $0.5

The (n/a) designation is reminder enough of what type of contract it is, and so by dropping the unnecessary row of $0.5's it would really enhance our ability to see how our pro-contracts are impacting future cap space!

Currently my Salary Cap projection for 24/25 is at $30m but I only have commitments of $22.5m. This gets remedied with that suggestion as well.

I have my own speed sheet for my team and project future contracts for what I think they would be. for prospects on google we should show it for 3 years since we know it will at least be for 3.

This isn't true though as p/na contracts are only good until the end of the season in which they hit 40 games. Only the current years salary is a true commitment...so there is no good reason to clutter up a column by projecting $0.5 forward. After 40 games the contract will either be terminated or extended for 5 years at a different number.

Anyway I only raised this because it's an easy fix.

I dont follow this at all. When a player is on a p-n/a contract its essentially a contract for 0.5m for all years in the future. Once a player hits 40 games played it changes to a salary of 0.5m for 2 years and then after that you'd have to extend. If you only show one year for a prospect contract your going to think you have more cap space for the following year then you do because you still have to pay your p-n/a guys 0.5m next year...

I get what you're saying and I can cut it down to the current year and 2 additional years. I don't want to have the salary only shown in the current year for the reason shooter brought up.

I think how it is shown in the google spreadsheet is accurate how its currently shown. Below is how a prospect contract is described in the rules. They are eternal 500k contracts. So showing them as 500k contracts for each year shown on the spreadsheet is correct. I think if slackjack wants to look at salaries in the 2024-2025 year he can make his own roster spreadsheet and track them however he wants to.

Prospect Contracts
To simplify things, all prospects (under 40 NHL games played) will inherit $500k/yr contracts.  Prospect contracts are eternal, they will always make $500k and no extension is required.  The contract lasts for two years after the point they accumulate 40 NHL games played.  They may accumulate this over multiple years, but the two year rule does not take effect until the year they actually hit the accumulation threshold.  A player becomes ineligible for a prospect contract when that player is released from a prospect contract that had its two year clock already start.

Example:  Prospect X plays his 40th game in January of 2011.  His prospect contract would now take him through 11/12 & 12/13 and he will need to be extended to a normal contract for the 13/14 season.

Prospects on the minor league roster do not count towards the salary cap.  They only count towards the cap if they're on the NHL roster.

I already had one Shooter, that was the profsl roster sheet. If my team icon could link back to that instead of google that would be great. I'd happily maintain that as I never wanted to use a spreadsheet in the first place. I think it's great that there are steps to maintain the league in the event profsl goes down but I'm here for site first and league second.

As far as prospect contracts go I see what you are saying and from one point of view it makes sense. But I look at prospect contracts as being a different class of contract (from pro-contract commitments). Prospect contacts are less obligatory and much more fluid in terms of roster movement. The 40 game threshold is a wait-and-see period that let's us evaluate the prospect and so there is a moment one commits to these players but until they are signed to a pro-contract I view them as having roster optionality.
