Title: UPDATE ROSTERS
Post by: SlackJack on February 08, 2021, 08:46:47 AM
I know it's tedious but we're way past due. I'm losing track on my scratch pad! Time for a refresh now please.

Google rosters are the only rosters being updated. I know you prefer on-site rosters, as do I, but once you spend a week updating them one by one, you'd understand.

It's a shame but I do understand.

I do welcome you, or whoever wants to or is able to update the rosters on the site and we can keep those updated instead. I personally just don't have time for that

I think everyone should update there own roster on here that way you can also personalize your team page the way you want to and not effect the official google roster.

the reason we went to google is we can have multiple people with access to make changes so what happened to us last year with the only person to change the rosters drops out and leaves the league with no ability to make changes.

Improvements can be made if you have time. For instance, you could make individual pages via SimplePortal and import the content from Google Spreadsheet via an iframe in said page. The owner(s) must click on publish, then paste the link into something along the lines of the code available in the roster example page I just made.
http://www.profsl.com/smf/index.php?page=BackyardNHLRosterExample
So basically...
1) Make spreadsheet
2) Click on file, publish (that one I made has a clone of your existing one, as I cannot publish it without access, so don't think that updating your current spreadsheet will change that page - it won't)
3) Get the link
4) Make a new SimplePortal page
5) Grab the code from my example page
6) Replace the link with yours
7) Adjust SimplePortal page permissions or whatever other config you may need
8) Change existing blocks to link to the new page rather than the spreadsheet, could also recommend using <a href="whatever page link" target="_blank">Roster[/url] to make them open in a new tab rather than having to go back and forth.

Advantages are that it embeds the spreadsheet directly into the forum, and it could actually be expanded upon with the design and stuff, I reckon. Quite nifty and doesn't force users to go to the actual spreadsheet, away from your site.
Disadvantages? Time consuming, can't make iframes to be responsive (google dictates styles) so you will have to scroll the tables.

Thank you Ninja, I think I'm gonna try this later today.

That would be an Anthony call but if it means extra steps for me to make team changes Im not for it. I already am doing this kind of work in 3 leagues on here so making things take longer is not good for me.

Updates to the Google spreadsheet would be displayed in the embedded version, so no they're not extra stuff, if anything, the other way around :)

I am not an expert about your leagues stuff but by sheer logic I would assume that while you bid/trade/do stuff you want to see the roster alongside it, to have a good overall view.
Basically, you would click on the rosters link as usual but rather than leaving the site to display a Google spreadsheet, you would be opening a new tab alongside your current one, with the embedded spreadsheet on profsl itself. Then, you would easily be able to switch tabs rather than having to use the back button on the browser to go back where you were and so on.
Hope this clears things up :)
