Being new to league for extensions can you do them during off season before next season? The only advantage I can see doing it now is if you figure player will rank higher this year and is right now around the same ranking. Next Subban is on his last year of contract and he is 17th right now and 4th year before so it would be  $6.0 million per with max of 3 years could you raise it to $6.5 million so you could sign him for 4 years?

Yep you can always choose to up the dollar value to give more years. There is another extension period that lasts 2 weeks after the season is done.

They are allowed to move up and down freely as you wish and don't close. The official change over of contracts is May 2nd, so any player that is on a 2 way contract for this season and will get a 1 way contract next season will get their new contract then.

No, it is 100% based on his ranking for the current season and the last. Whichever is higher and at the position he is highest at (in the case of multi-position eligibility).

I've read that next years cap could bump to $70-$71m but that it could actually drop to $68m depending on an NHLPA vote re: a wage escalator clause. Do we already have a projected cap in place for next season and if so where is it posted? If not, when will it be determined?
