Goalie Extension Increase Adjustment?
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:51:07 PM »
Shouldn't goalie extensions be increased? Seems like goalies should be paid the most since they're the absolute toughest player position to acquire in free agency or trade.

I say we increase goalie extensions for the start of 2013-14?

Checkout the top goalie salaries for 2013-14 on capgeek
http://capgeek.com/leaders/?season=2013&type=SALARY&position=G&limit=50

The top goalie extension in our league should be more along the lines of NHL salaries plus 30% just because there's no rule in place to stop teams from owning more than 1 starter which is messed up but whatever. So the top goalie ext would be 10.4m and so on. What do you commissioners think?

I brought this up before somewhere but was probably more of a general extension increase.    If you look at the history of the league they increased the cap each season to match the NHL's but never increased the costs of the extensions,  With the latest re-write of the NHL cap system it should be brought more into line now but....

I do still agree with you that since goalies are very limited in FNHL and they also score far more points than any of the skaters.  (top goalie right now 147 points. Top 21 points producers in FPTS are all goalies with Crosby sitting at a lowly 22. ) I would need to pay over 2 million more per year to crosby (8.6 million) for only 2/3 the points production of the top goalie( 6.4million)

Changing goalie extensions immediately for the 13/14 season wouldnt be fair to the teams who own goalies and planned on extending them at the lower rate but I do think it needs to be adjusted.

I am fine with leagues having a lean towards a certain position or where the goalie position scores the most points but in the end to balance the league they should be the highest paid position.

To bring things in line with where each position scores you need probably a 30% (as psycho suggested) increase on the goalie positions and a 30% decrease on the Defense extensions.  since you need to scroll to page 5 to even hit a d in the top scoring list.

if an owner wants to draw up the plans for the newlook goalie extensions then we'll insert that info into a vote/poll for Goalie Extensions to potentially take effect in 2014-15.

who's up for the project?

Here you go.  Current goalie salaries in the NHL with some artistic liberties used to create a more gradual decline in compensation.  multiplied by 1.30 (30%) as an added value adjustment.

I also added in defense with a 30% decrease so people could see what it looks like.  I can easily play with the percentages to see what the increase and decreases would look like.

I think if you are going to increase goalie extensions you almost have to decrease the defense so teams can still afford to field a full roster.

i personally like the goalie extensions you've proposed.
however, i am not on the same pg for defense extensions needing a decrease... my reasons

- defense is a huge player pool
- in FNHL we start 6 defensemen (versus 3 of each FWD position)
- a team that's suddenly able to start 6 stud D because they are cheaper might have a competitive advantage.

it's kinda what i have in my CBS money league where D scoring is heavily weighted and owning Erik Karlsson or a healthy Mike Green or Kris Letang means you can kick butt all season.

anyway, the main objective of increasing Goalie extensions is to force teams to decide whether it's worth it to keep a 2nd starting G they can only use sparingly with 1 active goalie spot (starting in 2013-14) versus trading that 2nd G for a stud FWD that can be easily started nightly.

bottomline, we just want goalie rich teams to share the goalie love in such a deep league.

it's that or push the RESET BUTTON, scrap the league because it's too polarized with a handful of goalie rich teams while others wallow in mediocrity never having a real chance at going deep in the playoffs.

i'm not saying "no" as commish to decreasing extensions for Defensemen... that's just my input on that topic. :toast:

I can live with this.

It's a much needed adjustment to level the playing field.

i think this needs an exec decision as increasing goalie extensions will help level the playing field by increasing the probability of goalie movement in and out of the free agent market as teams are put in a position to make cap decisions.

the target date to increase goalie extensions is immediately after the 2013-14 FNHL Stanley Cup Finals April 2014.

will give this until may 11th end of day for owner feedback.
