Title: Prospect Contract
Post by: snugerud on September 04, 2014, 10:41:19 AM
This will be my one and only suggestion I am going to throw out there.

The ability to offer a prospect contract.
Not that it would be used often since most gms are going to be willing to throw a 400k bid if the prospect is of any value but it would give some reward/value in taking the time to scout deep into the FA pool for a hidden gem and not having to carry a non playing player on your roster.

The prospect bid could be beat by any offer 400k or more that would give that player a pro roster spot.

This would reflect the NHL closer since NHL teams offer undrafted players 2 way contracts all the time or even just minor league.

Didn't we send you the memo snugerud. we prefer not to mirror the NHL in all areas... itherwise someone should cut me a fat paychq if we are.  :P

It wiuld be interesting to see what other owners/GMs think.

I like the fact that you cannot just pluck a young guy off of free agency and put him in your minors. It keeps the value of draft picks pretty high and it forces people to make decisions on their rosters - for example: is this player really worth losing a roster spot over? how big of an impact can this guy have in the long term? questions like that could effect players like Matt Read (which in hindsight, is a resounding yes).

I like the dynamic it creates and the added value it gives to draft picks. It is what makes this league very different from the rest of the leagues on this site.

I'm with Favo. Draft picks are worth more in FNHL because you can't pickup a free agent prospect and stash them in the minors. So being able to draft and let a prospect mature in the minors and not use a roster spot makes picks and the prospects more value in this league.

I think that's why it's 30 roster spots instead of 20, 23, 25 because you can reserve some spots for specs and darkhorse players.

Reward for scouting good undrafted prospects is built into the equation since FNHL is bigger and deeper than most leagues so the talent is thin to start with. I know Detroit is holding Sproul. Carolina is holding McMillan. My Sharks are holding Carrick, Gibbons, Pasquale.

That's my 2 cents.

From a laziness standpoint I will say No Thanks man. LOL
It would be one more thing to scan for while reading posts.

I say if anything allow of expanded rosters before the transaction freeze and trade deadlines to let contenders reload and get help for the playoffs while the non-playoff teams can stock up on a few prospects for the following yr.

Expanded Rosters. Say it with me gents! :taco:

Its already a really, really, really deep league. Expanding the rosters will only make it deeper. I can't jump on board with that one. We should keep it at 50 total players.

Actually your suggestion of expanding rosters would also create more requests for yourself and PigsRule to process.

I enjoy reading Snugerud's suggestions and even though I do not always agree I believe it is adorn of a health league to promote forward thinking and ways to improve the status quo.

Thanks Dickie.

This suggestion was more compromise on what I originally thought was to open the draft up to any minor eligible players.
When it comes to the draft I find it takes more skill/research to find the guy that was drafted in the 7th round 3 years ago that is now considered a hidden gem than just going down the 2014 list.
I am thinking a change like that wouldn't change the scoop of the 1st two rounds much but definitely the 3rd and 4th you would see some deviation from the current years draftee list.
