I'm putting an idea out there. PR said he brought it up a while back but I am dusting it off and making it easy to understand.

I suggest we allow for a home town discount of say 25% off on 2 players per team if they meet these 3 simple criteria:

1) Drafted by the FNHL (worked their way up the system or drafted-traded-resigned via trade or FA)
2) Actually play for the same team in the NHL as they do in FNHL
3) Contract value is over $4.0 million (could be $3m)

:iatp: its got legs baby!

I like the proposal. :iatp:

In all honesty I doubt a restriction will need to be place on contract value that this discount can be applied to.

Most owners will optimize their savings by applying it to their most expensive player especially if the team is only allowed to designate the players once per year.

Agree with DD here.

As far as the look of the contracts go I'd like to point out that there's no need for an HTD label as the team icon makes it redundant. I'd also argue that rather than 2 home town discounts per year we set a cap at just two players max per team (at any given time) that can be designated as home town discount eligible.

Max Domi, $2.0m (2014-2015-EL) :COL-NHL:

So every time Max comes up for an extension he gets the discount. If he gets traded or released to free-agency then a new HTD slot becomes available.

It would also be really cool to have to nominate these players in the prospect stage, sometime between being drafted and having their EL contracts run out. (ie. No current superstars!)

Clean, fun, simple.

I think the original contract needs to be tracked in case the player gets traded.

Slack how would you nominate. Guess its symantecs. Label the player while they are in the MiLR?

PPG how do you track players originally drafted by a team that qualify for the HTD? Would you start adding the team icon to each MiLR player or I guess the easier way is look up the draft list and trace it from that pt on?

Guidelines:
a. Non transferable
b. Renewable annually at Contract rollover
c. If that player gets traded in the NHL you retains the hometown discount until contract rollover

The Team page label would look like this with the actual contract value after the team logo:

EXAMPLE
For :VAN: Canucks:
Daniel Sedin, $3.9m (2013-2016-FP-1:VAN:-5.1)
Alexander Edler, $5.2m (2013-2017-FP-2:VAN:-6.9)

For :LAK: Kings:
Drew Doughty, $5.3m (2013-2017-FP-1:LAK:-7.0)
Jonathan Quick, $4.5m (2013-2017-FP-2:LAK:-5.9)

When would this start if we do it?

I'll always opt for the simplest approach so I'd lean towards nominating/branding at the time the player is drafted. It'd be a gamble and there is nothing wrong with that. Certainly this keeps us from having to track every single draftee moving forward.

As far as tracking the original contract, I don't think it is necessary. If I trade Max Domi away and he is on a favourable contract then my trade partner gets the savings for the remainder of the contract. Just delete the Avs icon and move him along.

I don't think we'd be facing a ton of 'sign and trade' scenarios especially if we had to nominate from the time they are drafted, as in most cases it will take several years for a prospect to start making an impact. Even if it does drive a few larger contracts down the over-all effect will still be less than if we are able to nominate 2 HTD's per year.

Again, I like the idea generally but these stipulations are not needed. See my post above.

This is the time for those who definitely don’t plan to return to say so that way we know ahead of time we have to find replacements. Nobody is pressuring you, it’s more of a courtesy to the LM who do this for nothing so they can make a game plan for next season.
