Los Angeles management is parting ways with Nick Leddy due to his expected contract extension which we could have found room for but felt the acquisition of a young prospect such as Dano warranted the move and would further allow us the flexibility to pursue other possible deals to improve our roster for the 2015-16 season. Irwin, though less consistent and prone to stretches in the pressbox is nevertheless a serviceable option on defense. By trading young Goaltenders there is always a risk they can come back to haunt you when they mature but that was the price to complete this trade with the Sharks.

Sharks confirm this deal.

We've been looking for an upgrade on Irwin since mid-yr. Didn't like what we got out of him after signing him as a FA last summer. Leddy is on an upstart Islanders team that's solid up and down.

The goalie specs were key to this deal to build depth in goal in our farm system. Gibson might even get a shot at backup duties if the new Leafs management team has their way.

That's fair value for 2 goalie specs in this market. Leddy is a gamble given the higher extension cost but he's getting a ton of icetime on the Island and in Brooklyn next yr.
