Title: Division realignment
Post by: Rob on June 28, 2018, 02:48:30 PM
We have a few teams moving around and it's become tough to keep a regional division approach.  I think this works.  Let me know your thoughts.  Also open to suggestions on the names.

Flip Pittsburgh and Boston and then go with the current NHL division names? The only teams that would be out of place would be the Redwings and Colorado.

Yeah that's what I was thinking.

I think that works for me, so long as the real life Wings aren't pushed back to the Central, I can have my fantasy team play wherever works best for the league.

Those team groupings look good, but can I put a plug in for the old-school division names?  (Adams, Patrick, Norris, Smythe)

Best to depart from regional divisions all-together! Pitsburgh in an Ontario division? Sorry but no! Let's go old school. Use the Patrick and Adams Division in the Wales Conference, and the Smythe and Norris Division in the Campbell Conference. Classic!

After a quick bit of research the divisions would look something like this:

Adams

:BOS-NHL:
:MON-NHL:
:BUF-NHL:
:OTT:
:WIN:

Patrick

:PIT-NHL:
:WAS-NHL:
:NYR:
:PHI-NHL:
:CAR-NHL:

Norris

:CHI-NHL:
:DET-NHL:
:TOR-NHL:
:STL-NHL:
:NAS:

Smythe

:VAN:
:EDM:
:LV:
:COL-NHL:
:PHO:

I like it. Winnipeg and Toronto seem like they should be swapped, though. Antique names, modern alignment.

This is my favorite setup out of the bunch.

I support -  Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, Pacific names.

I'm indifferent.

They all look good to me to be honest, haha. The current division names make more sense to me than the old school ones, but again, don't much care either way.

In the end it just comes down to the top-10 teams for playoffs anyways, correct? So being in certain divisions or conferences don't matter at the end of the day? Or do we actually play more matchups versus teams within our divisions/conference?

I also support the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, Pacific names. Probably because the old school names were before my time.

The only part where the divisions play a role is that the division winners are guaranteed the top 4 spots. So if a team has the 2nd best record in the league and the 2nd best in their division they would be the #5 seed in the playoffs because the other division winners get 2-4.

Yea, it only really matters for the best teams.  Because they can lose out on seeding.  Otherwise, we don't do division schedule weighting so it's really just for fun.

Same - I was 12 or so when they changed over.  Didn't care.

You guys are making 48 feel really, really old right now.

I was 6 when they changed over so don't remember it at all. That was also the year that the Northstars left MN. I didn't start following the NHL until the wild were an expansion team in 2000

The problem with the 'new' geographic division names is that not all align nicely with 5 teams that make sense in each of the Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific Divisions. (And what's with Metropolitan anyway....still think that's weird).

Hockey is about History kids. You may be young now but when you're in your 40's people around you won't know who Drew Doughty or Brad Marchand was. Adams, Patrick, Norris, and Smythe offer geo-neutral Division titles that let us mix and match without the weirdness of Pitsburgh being in the Canadian Division or Las Vegas being in the Pacific.

Long live Lubomir Visnovsky!

Might throw another wrench into this realignment talk with our replacement for Eric.

I can go either way with the Division names.

I also would move my team if it helped the league with where teams were placed.

I'd rather keep the Rangers in the mix - having all 6 original teams makes me happy.
