Yankees Acquire Eaton from Arizona
« on: January 12, 2018, 03:45:13 AM »
Headed to Arizona:
MI Rodriguez, Alfredo         P-n/a   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m
SP Perez, Cionel         P-n/a   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m
SP Morejon, Adrian         P-n/a   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m
OF Ortiz, Jhaylin         P-n/a   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m   $0.5m

Headed to the Bronx:
OF Eaton, Adam         2021   $7.9m   $7.9m   $7.9m   $7.9m
With $6.3m paid in 2021 (The last year of Eaton's deal).

Thanks to Yeagg for working this out with me. I think we talked about 15 different prospects before finally settling on this package. More on them later. The acquisition of Eaton requires me to take on some risk, as he is just 8 months removed from a devastating knee injury, but the upside, as he showed in April, last year, is tremendous, and on a very attractive contract. The $6.3m in 2021, helps me have a very cheap and productive bat as Eaton reaches his 30s. More importantly, it helps me re-sign the many players I have on contracts expiring in 2019 and 2020.

These prospects that I gave up all have appeal to me, and were all signed out of FA by myself. Ortiz has elite power potential, Morejon could be a #1 or 2, and I saw him many times in the NWL, Perez could be a very useful MoTR starter, and Estevez was paid $8m to play for the Dodgers. Regardless, as they say, you've got to give something to get something, and that sure happened here.

This deal took a little time and effort but it was fun to work out the details. Eaton is a tremendous player and he has ever more appeal now that he plays for a winning team. Unfortunately, his prime years would have been wasted on my rebuild. So I decided to move him for players that will help me in the future. Morejon is the key piece here and at only 18 he can be a fixture in my rotation for years to come. I am higher on Perez than others as I see him as a future 2 or 3. And the power that Ortiz offers was just too much to walk away from.

Good luck to the Yankees on their quest of a 3-peat

I meant Rodriguez, and he was paid $7m to play with the Reds.Regardless, as they say, you've got to give something to get something, and that sure happened here.

As much as i hate to see guys trade key players to the best team in the league, there is no baseball reason to veto this deal.

I hope at some point guys find similar deals with other teams trying to catch the Yanks and others. That said GMs are free to make whatever deals they choose is best for them.

  • Brent: Got to love how the NFL allows you to convert salary to bonus and just write checks to guys so their cap number is low.  Then the sports reporters latch onto "Brady takes less money" which is bull b/c he just got a check for the difference.

  • Brent: RBs will be cheaper unless you have a Bell or Gurley since NFL teams don't want to pay for them and they normally don't last long so that 2nd contract isn't as high as it is for other positions.
