Title: Phillies - Rockies Trade
Post by: papps on May 05, 2012, 03:05:24 PM
Phillies send:

OF Francisco, Ben, $0.5m (2013)
OF Beltre, Engel, $0.5m (P-n/a)

for

RP Medlen, Kris, $1.5m (2014)
Col pays .5m this year

I have a ton of injuries to my RP's and Medlen will help.  Beltre is a decent prospect but I really need an RP now.  Thanks for the easy negotiations Eric.  :toth:

Rockies to confirm.

:COL: confirms

I needed another OF to replace the injured Young. I like Beltre as a spec and have good hopes for him. Francisco helps me out this year.

Thanks Papps!

I have nothing against this deal but Beltre is signed this offseason and cannot be moved until June 1st (unless this rule is no longer in effect given we now have the 60 day no movement rule).

Ah yes I do see it in the rules.  I was going by the 60 day rule.  If it can't be processed now I have no problem waiting until June 1 if we have to.

This may be a dumb question but he was signed in spring training.  Is spring training considered offseason?

Yes it is

MLB does not consider spring training the offseason.  Again, I don't mind waiting until June 1 if we have to but I just want to be sure.

Understood, we do it to make it so, more or less, gets available for trade at the same time. And yes spring training is still the off-season for us. The off-season ends once real MLB is under way

I dont mind getting rid of the offseason rule and just go with 60 days rule for all times during the year.

I am not...IMO it will skew the free agent market with thoughtless spending. A few of you may have noticed in Moneyball, a lot of the free agent signings were on the trade block as soon as the 60 days was up. I am more partial to thoughtful spending, and feel there should be some balances to our free agency market, even if it is for two months into the season. In other words I am of the mind that when you are stuck with a player, even for a short period of the season, it may promote a little bit of caution.

So is this trade on hold?

Until June 1...you two are going to have to re-post it then
