Title: Draft Lottery for the top 8 teams that didnt complete playoffs?
Post by: snugerud on August 04, 2020, 10:08:04 AM
Typically our draft order has always been determined by standings and order eliminated in the playoffs.  Well this year we didn't get to complete the playoffs for the top 8 teams.

I weighed a few different options including just using regular season stands.  I think below maybe the best way to move forward as I also dont want to penalize teams simply because they had a good regular season, there is no guarantee they would have finished first.

Edit- Due to precedent I am fine with keeping it to regular season standings as the order setting criteria if any of the 8 teams object to it.

----------------

We do a draft lottery , weighted based on teams regular season standings so 8th would have more chances of winning than 1st.  My tool of choice is https://100yardrush.com/ (https://100yardrush.com/)  It's football themed but it gets the job done and I get a link that allows a replay of the results that can be shared.  I could even setup a live one through zoom if interested.

I love that idea.  I also would support a draft lottery every year to prevent tanking.

even if we didnt have a playoffs we still have an order of finish and we should do what we always do and draft in reverse order of finish. if we want to do a lottery we never make changes for the right now and always wait a year to implement such changes.

If any of the top 8 that would be affected by the lottery idea are against , I am fine with doing it via the season standings which I agree is the precedent.  I was just thinking it was a interesting way to mix it up a little for some late round picks and give you guys a chance to see how a lottery could shake out.

I would agree with Papps that this or at least a form of it should be used for future drafts for the non playoff teams to discourage the active tanking.

well Im not in favor of making changes just to changes things up. we played a full season so we know who the bad teams are. Its not like those teams just didnt set their line ups. they are bad because they dont have the players. if you want to talk about ways to prevent tanking a draft lottery is not the best way but making a team have a minimum # of active games played would work better and not letting teams trade all their good players for draft picks and prospects is another. but anyway it goes and we decide it would not be appropriate to implement this year.

Just so that we are on the same page here, I was only talking about doing the lottery for the teams that were still in the playoffs.  The bottom 12 would still be set via the standings, same as past seasons.

Current draft order:
1) :BOS-NHL:
2) :OTT:
3) :PHO:
4) :NYI:
5) :LV:
6) :MON-NHL:
7) :NYR:

9) :BUF-NHL:
10) :NAS:
11) :COL-NHL:
12) :WAS-NHL:
13) TBD
14)TBD
15)TBD
16)TBD
17)TBD
18)TBD
19)TBD
20)TBD

Lottery teams

We made it thru the wildcard round of the playoffs where Colorado and Washington were eliminated. Thats why they are in the 11th and 12th spots. He is only talking about doing a lottery for the 8 teams that were still alive in the playoffs when the league stopped.

Question - Are we doing the draft lottery, or are we just going by reverse standings?

Not sure there was a clear decision made.

(Not that it matters to me as I don't own my 1st Rounder)...But I always choke in playoffs anyways, so the lottery would probably still give my Canucks the 4th to 6th pick, haha.
