2 way contracts

This would be for prospects, that have been drafted to their respective teams.

Proposed Rule:
Players with no NHL experience can be signed to a 2 way contract for 3 years. This would be based on the appropriate draft position. They can then be recalled and sent down avoiding waivers.
All prospects will start with no contracts [N/C (2010-11)]

This would be to protect prospects from immediate poaching through waivers and short 2 year contracts.

Just for clarification this would only be for drafted prospects not free agent pick ups. Also if the player hits 1 NHL game played they are no longer able to be signed to a prospect contract.

This is for drafted players, not inexperienced players. So say I draft a player that has been taken 31st (just so I don't have to look up the numbers) overall this season. I can sign him to a prospect contract at 200k for 3 years but if he plays a game I can only sign him to 200k for 2 years or would have to sign him to an extension whichever is higher.

To be honest, I do not see this rule doing a lot. I am not going to take the time to sign a player that might not see a single game in the NHL for a few years, but still holds value in the long run (like 4/5 years long run). I feel like this rule needs to be in place for all players who have played less than 40 games, as those are the players who are constantly being rotated from being in the roster to being off the roster.

Here is a real NHL example: When the Flyers found themselves overstocked after grabbing another D man off waivers, they had to send someone to the minors. The only player that could do this was van Reimsdyke, as he is still signed to a rookie contract (and thus, protected from waiver wire bullcrap).

Here is a possible game situation: Say I bring up Jhonas Enroth, who is playing pretty good back-up goaltending for the Sabres right now. In the middle of the season, the Sabres decide to switch their back-ups around because Enroth needs more conditioning. I want to keep him in my system and he naturally came from my farm, BUT because I do not have the opportunity to sign him to a rookie contract, he has to take up a valuable spot in my roster OR risk losing him to the waiver wire.

What happens if I go on vacation or cannot possible get on here to check on my team?

I can understand losing an inexperienced player that you got off of free agency to waivers, because that player did not come from your farm. But I feel like a team should be able to protect their farm players for so many years because of situations like the one I mentioned above. I think we need to keep this rule to a 40 game system as well, as it'll give people time to see the changed happened.

Ok so what about how I have stated above 3 years to anticipate if your prospects will be in the NHL. Sort of a little advantage to signing players in the off-season or before a player comes into the NHL like it would be in the real NHL. With salary based on draft position only.

If they are between 1-39 games played their contract can be a 2 way contract with salary based on draft or extension value.

Over 40 games played have to be signed to a major league contract (1 way contract)
