Title: Canes and Ducks Trade
Post by: 99WildThing on September 25, 2020, 07:40:13 AM
:CAR-NHL:
Tom Wilson, $1.8m (2017-2020)  … 10.0m (2020-2025)
Joshua Morrissey, $2.8m (2019-2022)

for

:ANA:
Haydn Fleury, $2.5m (2018-2021-EL)
Jayden Halbgewachs, $0.6m (2019-2021)
D - Drew Helleson (2019: 2/47 - 0 Games)  property of :COL-NHL:
LW - Marcus Karlberg (2018: 3/80 - 0 Games) property of :CBJ:
Round 3 - 2020  (from :ANA:*, originally :NAS:)

With the imminent outright loss of Wilson, we felt it was best to get a deal done. It's pretty much the 11th hour at this point and we feel we can move forward with this deal. Since the last Canes owner sold the farm (my guess is he had an "All In" "Win now!" strategy), we need to rebuild and restock our :ATL-NHL: Georgia Thrashers with some fresh bodies. Thanks to EndGame and the Anaheim Ducks for working with us on getting this deal done. :toast:

:iatp: I'll call this a cap trade that's better than walking away empty handed. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions in fantasy, not often but it happens. This is one of them given the previous owner was indeed "going for it" and cashed in prospects, used cap space and didn't have room to resign Wilson when he was much cheaper. That's the excitement of FNHL, sometimes you make your own way, sometimes you got to step in a mop up before having your way with the franchise. :judge:

:iatp: I personally didn't want to touch that $10M contract even though I think Wilson is a beast.

It makes a lot of sense as a cap deal. That’s about what I would have given for Mr Wilson.

I like the ducks are aggressively building by identifying leverage opportunities.

Tom’s contract won’t look bad in two years when all those mid teen contracts kick in. Hits never slump and Toms good for 20 goals.

:iatp: I’m thinking that’s a good trade as cap / 11th hour deals go. Obviously if CAR had $20m in cap space this deal would’ve gone down differently but I think it’s fair given the circumstances.

:iatp: Good trade for the Canes considering the alternative. Wildthing picked up a great team but you knew there would be tough choices on the horizon given the competitive decisions Halo made.

This was definitely a snooze you loose type of year for extensions. Wilson could of probably been resigned for around 7.5m I like his deal better than giving OEL 10M per. 10M extensions for skaters are going to be handed out a lot in the future. I like this deal for Anaheim given how little they gave up.

That's a big trade to manage Carolina's cap situation. So if the Canes held onto Wilson and didn't make this trade, they would've lost the player that put them over the 10% overage total of $89.6m? Is that right or would there be a 1 week grace period to fix the issue? Just checking for future reference.

We talked to WildThing and the talks initially died off in the summer. Then we picked up the talks during the Supplemental and hammered out the sticking points. Canes wanted more futures. We didn't want to overpay for a big fat contract since we had no real urgency cap or player-wise. Worked out for us both. Canes and Ducks seem to be moving in the right direction for the upcoming season. :toast:
