Title: DISCUSSION: Blocked Shot Stat?
Post by: PsychoticPondGoons on April 16, 2019, 04:15:00 PM
Gents, starting this discussion to see opinions on whether we want to use Blocked Shot as a FNHL stat in the future.

Let's hear your opinions and if there's enough interest, we put 'er on the table for a good ol' vote.

I could go either way, but it would definitely make some shutdown d-men and grinding forwards more worth rostering. It is also a valuable contribution to an NHL teams play. Look at Marner's two late blocked shots at the end of the game yesterday, give me those points! lol

What would be a blocked shots value?  Hypothetically

I'd say given these values
Shots-on-Goal: 0.25
Hits per game: 0.25

Blocked Shot should be the same 0.25 to keep it simple.

That adds quite a lot of points 35 pts per year for the top 50 bs blueliners alone - 1/3 of those guys are currently on the cheap. I don’t like that. I would say it helps add value to the Defencemen overall which is needed.

Hmmm

Hmmm, to knock down the value of a Blocked Shot stat to 0.15 pts per, wed be looking at a modest 21pts bump up per yr.

It mainly adds value to 3rd 4th liners as well as 2nd & 3rd Blueliner pairings.

Personally, I'm not interested in adding the Blocked Shots category.
There's no need. FNHL scoring cats are good, as is.

But if the majority of owners want it, I would suggest implementing 2yrs out give it impacts the value of players and their extensions.

I agree on that point, smart

I agree low tier defensive players need the bump and it’s a common added cat in other leagues

I think I would vote yes at .15 for 20-21 season... probably still need to sleep on it more but I like the idea

I for one do not see added value in including the Blocked Shots category. This league seems to be running well and introducing a new scoring category could impact teams and strategies even if it will not be implemented immediately. There is no urgent need for Blocked Shots so I would not be in favor of added it. Thanks.

I'm good if we add blocked shots.

I actually slightly liked that stat more than hits. At least a blocked shot is a blocked shot. A hit is dependent on the official scorer and his interpretations. Some of these guys call it a hit when a player brushes up against a player. Others require a player to drive another through the boards before they will credit a player with a hit. Big reason why you'll see players fluctuate between 8 hits one night and 0 another night, even though they play the same game.

OK, off my (http://www.profsl.com/smf/Smileys/default/soapbox.gif)

haha, I also think about that often. I like to occasionally have some grinders on my squad. I had Matt Martin for years and when officials would record hits properly, it would be great, but sometimes you get nothing.

Home town official scorers can be funny. For example, Ovechkin will get credited for 10 hits in a game against Pittsburgh if the game is in Washington. If the same game is played in Pittsburgh, he will get credited with 1. The truth is somewhere in the middle. That's just an example. Not picking on the Caps or Pens ... all teams do that.

I also think it is funny when home town official scorers try to sneak in a second assist for their guy on a goal. Or not credit an assist to an opposing player. Another example, whenever the Penguins score a goal in Detroit, the official scorer will call it unassisted if at all possible. I think it is so the announcer doesn't have to say the words "... assisted by Sidney Crosby" and depress the crowd. (http://www.profsl.com/smf/Smileys/default/rotfl.gif)

But assists usually get changed correctly by the NHL after the game. Hits do not.

If we add it, Blocked Shots should be a nominal stat.
0.15 per Blocked Shot makes good sense.

20-21 season @ 0.15 per

I'm all for Blocked Shots as a scoring cat. There's decent value for teams with players willing to take one for the team.

0.15 per starting in 2020-21 makes sense.

I actually like the blocked shots category. As Crow said, it's certainly more meaningdul than a hit.

So is this a go for 2020-21?
Or do we take an official vote.
Just wondering.

Seems like there's are a number of teams in favour of this change for next season.

We usually vote to make it official.

:iatp: BB is correct. Don't let that get to your head BB.
I'll post a FNHL vote for Blocked Shots to be put in place for the 2020-21 season.
