RC Decision - Wildcard Playoffs in 2013
« on: May 01, 2012, 11:04:05 AM »
MLB has moved to a two wildcard per league setup for this season.  We have decided to implement this in the 2013 season.  We need to determine the appropriate playoff scheduling for teams and then work from there.

My thoughts are that we have the following.

World Series = Last week of season and last full week of season (anywhere between 8-14 days)
LCS = One full week prior to WS
LDS = One full week prior to DS
WC Round = During same week as DS with winner essentially having two matchups that week

I'm going to argue that we don't have any sort of meaningful play during the last week of the season. Guys get benched, especially on good teams, even when they don't have injuries. That makes it tough because then we have essentially 5 weeks of playoffs. 1st WC, 2nd WC, LDS, LCS, and WS - and that is making the WS only a week.

It makes it difficult because I really don't think it makes sense to have 6 weeks on playoffs. We could also use the last week of the regular seasons stats as the "new" wildcard, without having a tie breaker. Then that leads to further tie breakers...it gets muddled to say the least.

True true... what are we doing this year for the World Series?

I like the idea of the last week of the regular season stats as the wildcard round.  The regular season gets settled first, then tiebreakers are applied, and then the final week scores between the wildcard teams are tabulated.  If the RC really wanted it, we could put that in place this season without a problem.

We are doing the same thing as last year...which to the best of my knowledge was no games on final week of the season. If I am mistaken, then (and I know Rob was in favor of this) then we could implement it - as the schedule has been fluid thus far and it is still early

I would support the addition of a WC spot iff it does not prolong the playoffs.

One way to simulate the WC playoff game is to look at the highest daily score of the two WC teams in the final week of regular season, and have that as the tie breaker / playoff game.

I like that idea to a point.  This is fantasy baseball and a high daily score could be biased by the number of SPs pitching that day.
