Seattle Expansion
« on: July 22, 2020, 11:44:43 AM »
I've been trying to figure out how to represent the expansion in our league and I think I have something.

I will swap my team for anyone else's team in the league if I can turn that team into Seattle and we have an expansion draft.  I think it would help balance out what is some top team heaviness and bring some more parity.  Leaving a strong team in Pittsburgh and hopefully adding another strong team out of what might not have been one if I am any good at this.

It would not need to happen until the end of the 20/21 season just like the NHL.  That would give all of us a year to make whatever moves necessary.

The rules could be:
  • Each team can protect up to 8 forwards, 4 defensemen, and 1 goaltender OR 10 players regardless of position.
  • Any player with two or fewer years of NHL/AHL experience is exempt.
  • Seattle cannot take more than 2 starting goalies and 1 backup.  Seattle cannot leave a team that had a starting goalie with no starting goalies
  • Seattle would take 1 player from each of the other 19 teams and then 1 additional player from the top 5 teams based on 20/21 standings.
  • Trades can be made to Seattle to exempt a team from the draft
  • Seattle can retain any player with two or fewer years of NHL/AHL experience from the team it used to be.
  • Seattle can retain 1 major league eligible player from the team it used to be.
  • Any player not retained by Seattle will be released

I see no reason to hold an expansion draft in our league. Maybe if new GM's were beating down the door? Would love us to run a playoff pool though. It's going to be hard enough watching hockey without fans so would be better with bets or brags on the side!

Fun idea for sure, but I'm kind of with Slack on this one.

Unless we get an influx of a few new/active owners on this site, seems like we're just picking/asking from the same pool of people on ProFSL that have been here for 3+ years (generally more).

For playoff pool could do something real simple like just points based, pick X amount of players, or X amount of players per position, and just ride it out. Officepools or some other free site to keep track of points. Point give-outs could be discussed whether it's just 1 per G and A and 2 for a Goalie W 1 for SO, or something more complex.

I will weigh in.  It's a wrinkle that could be added and could help bring about some parity temporarily, but I don't think an expansion is a good way to create parity in a league long term.

I agree, if we want to try to improve parity in the league there are better ways
