Orioles Prospect Contract

The Orioles did this trade for two reasons.  We had no use of Jake Westbrook or Brian Wilson this year due to the fact that our team is not competitive.  We were able to pick up a couple of prospects to improve our MI and OF depth for the future and shed the last three years of the Brian Wilson deal freeing up precious salary cap space for future moves.

The Orioles Agreed to this trade because it improves a very weak farm team for a team that is rebuilding and looking to compete in 2013.  Kendrys Morales is a good CI who is in the Major leagues but this team is currently not constructed to win now like the Cardinals are.  The orioles are excited about the prospects they received in return.  Wil Myers, Matt Davidson, and Derek Norris should help the Orioles lineup in the future as all are highly regarded prospects.  Zach Lee and Tyler Matzek are good young pitchers in the lower minors and have high ceilings and should help the roster in a few years.  The Orioles were willing to pay for Morales salary this year and part of his salary next year to improve the prospects sent back in return.  For a smaller market team with a limited salary cap this was a big concession that I was willing to make to improve my farm team.
