I'm putting an idea out there. PR said he brought it up a while back but I am dusting it off and making it easy to understand.
I suggest we allow for a home town discount of say 25% off on 2 players per team if they meet these 3 simple criteria:
1) Drafted by the FNHL (worked their way up the system or drafted-traded-resigned via trade or FA)
2) Actually play for the same team in the NHL as they do in FNHL
3) Contract value is over $4.0 million (could be $3m)

Guidelines:
a. Non transferable
b. Renewable annually at Contract rollover
c. If that player gets traded in the NHL you retains the hometown discount until contract rollover
The Team page label would look like this with the actual contract value after the team logo:
EXAMPLE
For :VAN: Canucks:
Daniel Sedin, $3.9m (2013-2016-FP-1:VAN:-5.1)
Alexander Edler, $5.2m (2013-2017-FP-2:VAN:-6.9)
For :LAK: Kings:

I like the proposal. :iatp:
In all honesty I doubt a restriction will need to be place on contract value that this discount can be applied to.
Most owners will optimize their savings by applying it to their most expensive player especially if the team is only allowed to designate the players once per year.

I personally like option 2 or 5 which are the same except for the abbreviation.

I think the league has enough wrinkles without adding more to it.
Extensions are already low in comparison to what players sell for in FA.
third reason , i hate the Montreal NHL team and really dont like many of their players.

He has a point. I hate Montreal too.

As far as the look of the contracts go I'd like to point out that there's no need for an HTD label as the team icon makes it redundant. I'd also argue that rather than 2 home town discounts per year we set a cap at just two players max per team (at any given time) that can be designated as home town discount eligible.
Max Domi, $2.0m (2014-2015-EL) :COL-NHL:
So every time Max comes up for an extension he gets the discount. If he gets traded or released to free-agency then a new HTD slot becomes available.
It would also be really cool to have to nominate these players in the prospect stage, sometime between being drafted and having their EL contracts run out. (ie. No current superstars!)
Clean, fun, simple.

I think the original contract needs to be tracked in case the player gets traded.
Slack how would you nominate. Guess its symantecs. Label the player while they are in the MiLR?
PPG how do you track players originally drafted by a team that qualify for the HTD? Would you start adding the team icon to each MiLR player or I guess the easier way is look up the draft list and trace it from that pt on?

I'll always opt for the simplest approach so I'd lean towards nominating/branding at the time the player is drafted. It'd be a gamble and there is nothing wrong with that. Certainly this keeps us from having to track every single draftee moving forward.
As far as tracking the original contract, I don't think it is necessary. If I trade Max Domi away and he is on a favourable contract then my trade partner gets the savings for the remainder of the contract. Just delete the Avs icon and move him along.
I don't think we'd be facing a ton of 'sign and trade' scenarios especially if we had to nominate from the time they are drafted, as in most cases it will take several years for a prospect to start making an impact. Even if it does drive a few larger contracts down the over-all effect will still be less than if we are able to nominate 2 HTD's per year.

Agree here. Don't fancy the hometown discount, I dispise Minnesota irl same thing. If anything hometown - place of birth would be more exciting but requires a hell of a job. I like it now being randomized with players

If you drafted the player the hometown discount can be used.
Think about it.
This makes draft picks more valuable. BOOM! Mind blown! :winner:
Gents - the league is called Franchise NHL. We are just doing what good franchises do for their favorite sons SIGN THEM TO A HOMETOWN DISCOUNT! :agent: :taco:  :toast:

#3 cap limit ok I can toss that beauty out the window.
But I got to stand by #2
Play for the same team in the NHL and FNHL is a :winner: because that plays up the concept of Franchise player and Hometown Discount. :taco: :taco: :taco:

FLASH FWD.
A POSSIBLE FUTURE TRADE GETS HELPED ALONG BY THE HOMETOWN DISCOUNT!
Vancouver or Ottawa whoever's the owner of Marian Hossa rings my :CHI-NHL: Hawks up.
"Hey PPG, want to own Hossa and bring him home?"
:bla: :bla: :bla:
"We need more man. What do you mean why? Because you get that Hometown discount and save cap on this deal. No brainer!" BOOM! Trade signed sealed and delivered!
This Hometown discount just helps lubricate deals. :bacon: :toast:
-
Yeah sorry, don't really like it. I fancy it the way it is, which is great.

NOTED SNYGG! Thanks for the feedback man! :toast:

This is a very biased rule, that is why some may not like it.
Capitals love the idea, with 2 studs who play for the caps.
Oilers hate it and couldn't be more against it!
Seems like a great rule for a new league, not so sure about a league in year 5!
I would probably agree, but only with the 3 conditions as originally stated. Edmonton will just move on like it doesn't even exist :win:

Tracking the cap value of the original contract before the HTD means once the player is traded they return to their original contract.
WHY? Because we can't put restrictions on movement whereas in the real league, the player getting or giving a HTD would also have a NO TRADE or NO MOVEMENT clause to limit/prevent being traded. We can't do that in FNHL but can remove the discount/advantage once the player leaves their home team!
-
2) Actually play for the same team in the NHL as they do in FNHL
This stipulation ties your fantasy team to the real life draft ability of your namesake. This makes for an uneven playing field.....might be cute in a free league but it's not fair for this one.

Every team should have 1 or two guys that play for the same NHL team.
BUT don't forget there's the other possible option, the player was drafted by your FNHL and you've groomed them for yrs but instead of releasing or trading them when they qualify for a big raise you give them a HTD to keep them. FNHL Draftees by the same team can qualify.

The Pens throw in our support for this ...
-
Wouldn't it be easier to give the discounts to players on EL status? Cause that is already being tracked.
-

What PPG stated was
* teams designate 2 players annually in August (contract roll-over period)
* qualifies by (A) being drafted by the FNHL team or (B) plays for same NHL team as FNHL team
* 25% discount
* notation on player's contract TBD
* discount only valid while player plays for the team (a trade void the discount)

Not sure I understand the statement from Favo. Does everyone else understand?

* teams designate 2 players annually in August (contract roll-over period) - To a total of two or an additional two per year? A total of two would be good.

2 all can be designated per yr but they are not cumulative.
-
2 all can be designated per yr but they are not cumulative.
So a maximum of 2 discounted contracts on ones roster at any given time. In other words if I sign contracts A & B in 2015 to three years each at a discount then I cannot sign contracts B & C in 2016 to a discount as well. This what you mean?
-
Sounds like it SJ.
But then the question is whether we can add another discount contract thru trade if that player happens to play for the same NHL team as my FNHL team or if my team originally drafted the player.
So this is another way to clarify it's only 2 of these HTD contracts on my roster at any given time.

One of the reasons I am advocating for HTD's to have no movement. Think twice before discounting a player because you will have to wait him out or buy him out. Simplify's tracking immensely and adds a nice twist.

It's not too muddy....but this is a discussion thread so there has been some of that.

* notation on player's contract TBD

*The first point has been clarified to mean that there can only be a maximum of 2 HTD contracts on your roster at any given time.
*For simplicity I think that the nomination should happen sometime between when the player is drafted and signing his initial EL contract. These HTD contracts would have a built-in No Trade Clause. (PPG and I talked about this at length and he at least seemed to be mulling it over.) This would allow us to not worry about tracking, trading, and voiding discounts.
*Contracts could look like this: C - Connor McDavid (2015: 1/1 - 0 Games) :PHO:
All McDavid's subsequent contracts would be discounted by 25% as long as he played for Arizona. Arizona would not be able to trade him however so would have to let him walk to free-agency at an extension period or buy him out in order to get rid of him. Hard to imagine wanting to move McDavid, but consider this: C - Alexei Yashin , $2.2m (1992-1995-EL) :OTT:
There could be an allowance for new GM's to be able to void these contracts so they are not handcuffed but otherwise it is easy enough to buy them out for existing GM's. That's my vision anyway. Just a touch simpler than the way it was initially presented and very easy to manage.
-
This should only go into effect for 2016-17.
I like this idea. It's a little twist for FNHL and a play on the theme of "Franchise".
-
I think you should be able to trade your home town players, if its a move to become cap complient. Any one you sign off your minor league team could end up costing your competitive edge. Kind of a deterrent to "develope" players. IMO this change would answer the question of why the guy with no minor team dosent like draft picks.

No trading of Hometown discounted player because they usually also get a No Trade or No Movement Clause since the player has given their hometown team a signing discount.

What's the final verdict on how Home Town discounts work?
-
What's the final verdict on how Home Town discounts work?
Homeown Discounts will kick in August 8, 2016 or the 1st day after we roll contracts to 2016-17. :judge:
-
Not urgent, but I would like to clarify exactly who will be eligible for a hometown discount starting next August. I will use specific examples from the Pens roster:
1) Sidney Crosby, $5.6m (2012-2016) - I assume he would be eligible for the FNHL Pens since he plays for the NHL Pens. But I don't know if the FNHL Pens actually drafted him, but I'm not sure if that criteria must be met as well. Would he be eligible?
2) Marc-Andre Fleury, $9.1m (2014-2019) - Ditto Crosby above ... however, he is under contract through 2019. Can his contract be re-negotiated to take advantage of the hometown discount, or are we saying you can only do this when their contracts are up for renewal?
3) Robert Bortuzzo, $1.7m (2015-2018) - The FNHL Pens drafted him, but he now plays for the NHL Blues. Would he be eligible? I realize his salary is only $1.7M and probably not worth it, but just using him as an example of someone previously drafted by an FNHL team that a) there is no record on the team page that the FNHL team drafted him and b) he no longer plays for the same NHL team.
Thanks in advance, PPG

I am with McCrow on this. Things are still pretty muddy. Would like to know exactly what is going into effect next year/season. Would make some differences on trades I pursue throughout the season.

I have another question to add to this.
If I didnt draft, but traded for a prospect before he made the jump to the pro roster would they count for the hometown discount?

Leaning twd NO.
Loyalty is the thought behind this discount.
Of course. Its a pain to track prospects that get dealt.
So maybe. PPG can make the final call.

I will define this officially but it should read
Any promoted player draft by or from the MiLR of a team qualifies for the HTD! :judge:
Easier to track both through Draft lists and MiLR prospect promotion transactions.
So you traded for a kid that's a spec and you call him up. In a few yrs the kid gets a fat extension and you get to slap a Home Town Discount on his extension because he was promoted from your MiLR.
He's a Franchise Player.
Still got to figure out how to display the notation on pages.
-
Can't wait to see this spelled out.

Since we do not use two ways or anything like that, how about we use italics. For example:
Connor McDavid $3.0m (2015-2018)
[ i] Connor McDavid $3.0m (2015-2018) [/i]
