If only I had put in Cowgill instead of Boesch it would have been a 300 point swing...if only...

1) :LAD: Los Angeles Dodgers  (63-9) - Only team averaging over 1400 points, best record, two-time defending champ, doesn't get much better than this
2) :PHI: Philadelphia Phillies  (60-12) - Phillies lead expands to three weeks
3) :STL: St. Louis Cardinals  (57-15) - Consistent squad has second most points and a 9 game lead over Reds in NL Central
4) :BOS: Boston Red Sox  (62-10) - Been on a tear since my last debut of the rankings.  This is the best the Red Sox have done in FGM history.(3)
5) :NYY: New York Yankees  (40-32) - Yankees aren't catching up to Boston any time soon, but they have improved since my last rankings.  Still, this team averages less than 1000 points(1)
6) :TEX: Texas Rangers  (51-21) - A bit of a slip but 4th most points and a 12 game lead over Oakland(2)
7) :CLE: Cleveland Indians  (50-22) - Cleveland has been here before, but the race in the AL Central is the tightest this year(6)
8) :KC: Kansas City Royals  (45-27) - Continuing good work and only one week of play to be back in division lead, team is very healthy
9) :CHW: Chicago White Sox  (50-22) - White Sox are officially tied for the AL Central lead.. Will the success continue or will they burn out again?(1)
10) :OAK: Oakland Athletics  (39-33) - Don't look now but Rob's Athletics have a winning record, are on a tear, and are now averaging over 1,000 points(6)
11) :CIN: Cincinnati Reds  (48-24) - The Big Red machine loses Baxter who had 500 points for the season, but they continue to lead NL Wildcard(2)
12) :ATL: Atlanta Braves  (38-34) - Bravos are up and down like Buccos but have scored 16 more points per week, lost ace Jered Weaver though which has sunk this team from earlier season lead(7)
13) :PIT: Pittsburgh Pirates  (39-33) - Up and down weeks but currently in WC2 lead(1)
14) :HOU: Houston Astros  (36-36) - Team is still 6th in total points and very healthy… it's about time they move up my rankings(7)
15) :WAS: Washington Nationals  (37-35) - Jake's Natinals are still winning - Melky Cabrera :WAS: MVP?(3)
16) :MIL: Milwaukee Brewers  (29-43) - Ben's team has a lot of ground to make up, but they are 16th in fantasy points, Pujols is hitting and Mauer is due back this week(3)
17) :COL: Colorado Rockies  (27-45) - New GM expected to be hired, team is right behind :MIL: in fantasy points but has even more to catch up in the win column… can this team salvage the season with a wildcard?  Every win counts for future salary caps!
18) :TB: Tampa Bay Rays  (33-39) - Mike's Rays are one week away from not having a losing record. Team relies on small ball as no player has over 800 points.  Team MVP Ben Zobrist is due for a hot streak.  Lawrie is heating up which was a nice replacement for the injured Longoria.(7)
19) :NYM: New York Mets  (31-41) - Corey has definitely improved the Mutts.  He has two guys that I have in a keeper league - Beltran and Furcal - how long will these guys last (note Beltran has cooled down a bit)(4)
20) :CHC: Chicago Cubs  (23-49) - Lahair is cooling down, A-Ram's annual injury imp is happening, but rookies Trout and Darvish have been stellar(5)
21) :SEA: Seattle Mariners  (35-37) - Team needs depth in a bad way, stars are there to give them a run for a winning record(3)
22) :MIN: Minnesota Twins  (30-42) - Jones, Saunders, Hafner… the team is overperforming - then again guys like Belt and Gardner can contribute more in the 2nd half
23) :SF: San Francisco Giants  (30-42) - De Aza, Blanco, and Murphy are this team's triple threat… if Lincecum can settle down then this team can make a dent in the NL West #2 race(2)
24) :TOR: Toronto Blue Jays  (30-42) - Horrible year for the Blue Jays, but the team is only 12 games under .500 and has a lot of depth… can Daniel make some magic happen?(4)
25) :DET: Detroit Tigers  (28-44) - Tough year for Detroit who is 6-32 in the division(1)
26) :ARZ: Arizona Diamondbacks  (22-50) - Arizona has done poorly outside the weak NL West (ignoring :LAD: obviously), they are 6-27 outside the division this year(1)
27) :MIA-MLB: Miami Marlins  (21-51) - Tough year for the Fish who were riding high after 2011(3)
28) :SD: San Diego Padres  (15-57) - Chris' Padres have improved in my version of the power rankings but are 29th in points(1)
29) :LAA: Los Angeles Angels  (10-62) - Only two wins outside AL West(1)
30) :BAL: Baltimore Orioles  (1-71) - Even the extrapolated record at the end of the year will be horrible… team just acquired Bundy though

The fish still have high hopes of stepping it up in the second half of the season and finishing the season (.500) record.

Looks like my :COL: are going to fall to 2-6 this week and bring my total to 29-51. I need my guys to get healthy and make a push for a late Wild Card spot.  :win:

Adrian Gonzalez needs to wake up. 4 HR and no walks since May 20th is not acceptable.

Some interesting stats:
- Teams are spending a total of 3.191B on salaries this year, 39.8% is spent on pitching the rest is spent on hitting. This split is not too far off from the  47% (batting) / 17% (defence) / 36% (pitching) split that the scoring system is targeting.
- Splits of some of the top teams as per the latest power ranking:
:LAD: 79% hitting, 21% pitching
:STL: 49% hitting, 51% pitching
:BOS: 43% hitting, 57% pitching
:NYY: 61% hitting, 39% pitching
:PHI: 56% hitting, 44% pitching
:OAK: 71% hitting, 29% pitching
:TEX: 70% hitting, 30% pitching
:CLE: 55% hitting, 45% pitching
:KC: 59% hitting, 41% pitching
:CIN: 63% hitting, 37% pitching
- It's interesting that two of the top teams are spending significantly more on pitching. 5 out of the top 10 teams are spending more than the league average on pitching. It is not necessary to allocate all resources to hitting to succeed in this league.
- The biggest hitting-pitching split belongs to :NYM: (85% hitting, 15% pitching)

More neat stats (you can tell I am a stathead):

- To succeed, is it better to spend a lot of $ on a few players or spread out the cash? To measure this we can look at the variance of the players' salary on a given team (I took out the 500k and all negative cash exchanges).
- The team with the largest spread in salary is :MIL: (Pujols / Berkman / Utley has a significantly higher salary than the other players). The team with the lowest spread in salary is :TEX: (highest paid player is Cruz at 6.5M).
- Out of the top 10 teams with the largest salary spread, 7 are over .500, including dividing leaders :LAD:, :BOS:, :PHI: and :CLE:
- Out of the top 10 teams with the smallest salary spread, only 2 (:TEX:, :ATL:) are over .500.
- Here is the list, ranked from the largest to smallest salary spread:

MIL
LAD
NYY
BOS
NYM
CLE
CHC
PHI
CIN
PIT
OAK
DET
HOU
TB
MIN
SF
KC
WAS
LAA
STL
BAL
MIA
SEA
ARZ
ATL
COL
TOR
CHW
SD
TEX

  • dbreer23: Take two to tango, though. Most owners with adequate or surplus SP aren't interested in prospects as they're trying to win now.

    May 05, 2024, 02:46:48 PM
  • Daddy: Also agreed. Top quality pitching probably means not much depth. A few injuries can challenge you. Pitching other than top end pitching has been devalued in fantasy. Everyone wants the stud.

  • Daddy: I here to tell you that ALL major league pitching is good pitching. A great hitter beats a terrible pitcher just 3 out of 10 times. Which means the worst pitchers > the greatest hitters.

  • Brent: He had that view b/c of his father who was a blackjack dealer in Vegas.
    May 05, 2024, 04:35:28 PM
  • Daddy: Yes @Brent!! That is it exactly. Pitching is the house & it always wins in the end.

  • Daddy: There shouldn't be many innings available in FA in dynasty fantasy leagues IMO. Thats guaranteed money! To hell with High A ball.

  • Daddy: Until someone starts a minor league baseball fantasy game or option. Maybe we can petition fantrax? I just dont think they will care for that.
    May 05, 2024, 05:23:07 PM

  • Braves155: The problem with the minors is not the system as a whole, it is some Farm Systems are more 'elite' at being able to produce talent than others. If you look across MLB teams you can pretty easily tell the great systems from the weaker systems and talent development
    May 05, 2024, 05:57:14 PM
  • Braves155: With regard to pitching in the Minors...there is  method to the madness. It is all about what you make of it tho. I agree that it can seem certain type arms in the minors are a dime a dozen
    May 05, 2024, 06:02:39 PM
  • Daddy: Mr Braves you are my guy. There isnt anything wrong with minor league studs or flops. I get it in REAL baseball.
    May 05, 2024, 06:20:28 PM
  • Daddy: This is fantasy baseball. We dont generate revenue selling prospects and merchandising. Our top farms dont get a write up in Sports Illustrated.
    May 05, 2024, 06:22:29 PM
  • Daddy: Load up on MLB guys, then near MLB guys, and only then is the quality of your prospects matter. Ya dig ;)
    May 05, 2024, 06:24:36 PM
  • Brent: I over value minors to a fault, but I am softening on that stance.
