FGM Announcement - Please Read
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:27:09 PM »
Beginning at the start of the regular season the salary figures that we use to correlate our figures for signing players will be changing to emulate the MLB. The old list is antiquated.

Thank You
Management

Just to clarify, the #1 SP in FGM would be paid at the same rate as the highest paid SP in MLB (I think this is still Santana), is that right?

Sabathia's new deal averages 24.4M per year.

I could be dead wrong on this, but I recall discussing this topic with Colby in the past, and I got the impression that we would not be using the MLB contracts as the basis for contract extensions going forward.  Rather, we would let the free agent market in this league determine salaries in the future.  There are advantages to not using the real life contracts.  For example, I can't imagine anyone re-signing relief pitchers at 12-15M per year since we don't use saves.  Also, the new # 1 catcher salary would sky-rocket to 23M per year with Mauer's new contract.

I discussed it with Colby a few months back and he agreed with me. Letting the league establish value you are going to have nothing but guys making 4 mil a year. This will also maintain the free agency market that will eventually disappear with letting the league establish value.

I was questioned about this by an outsider.  I did change my stance on this issue for the reason that Dan mentioned.  There is no one-size fits all unless we simply did not adopt MLB salaries for relievers!  What a reasonable GM would do is not pay a top reliever their market value.... think REAL LIFE.  Let the other GMs chase fools gold for what amounts to a few extra points per week.  Thee +WAR on this over a season is low, but this is why this league makes you feel like you are the GM of the Franchise!

Re: FGM Announcement - Please Read (Extension Values)
« Reply #5 on: July 16, 2012, 12:48:46 PM »
Does anyone know how the original lists of extension values by position were created?  I know where the information comes from, but I cannot think of a way to update the values other than an extremely time-consuming method.

Those were my original thoughts, but I got the impression from Colby that this topic had already been decided.  League management was planning to update the extension values based on real life MLB contracts, not the contracts in the league itself.  Therefore, I was hoping that someone familiar with the original setup of the league knew of an easy way to accomplish this task.

This may be a good place to start.

Roy I started a list and will finish it mid August...I think we should start it at the end of the season, giving everyone a chance to resign their current players at the current prices. When the books switch over, then we can switch over the values.  When I originally posted this, I had grand aspirations that it wasn't going to take as much time.

  • Daddy: Also agreed. Top quality pitching probably means not much depth. A few injuries can challenge you. Pitching other than top end pitching has been devalued in fantasy. Everyone wants the stud.

  • Braves155: The problem with the minors is not the system as a whole, it is some Farm Systems are more 'elite' at being able to produce talent than others. If you look across MLB teams you can pretty easily tell the great systems from the weaker systems and talent development

  • Braves155: With regard to pitching in the Minors...there is  method to the madness. It is all about what you make of it tho. I agree that it can seem certain type arms in the minors are a dime a dozen
