Franchise NHL: Completed Transactions / Contract Extensions Cheaper than current salary« on: August 02, 2011, 04:40:28 PM »
are you able to offer a contract extension that lowers the players existing salary...
example: i bid on FA bryzgalov and win with 50m bid... assuming i have the cap space, i sign the guy to 1yr deal at 50m, then extend him to 5yrs at 8million OR 4yrs at 6.4m (goalie extension ceiling) instead of 5yrs at 10m per. Q: is this a contract loophole or just good cap management. 887

SITUTATION
9-teams currently dont have a starting goalie. i count 5 Free Agent starting goalies up for bids... bryzgalov, crawford, anderson, vokoun, roloson... schneider isnt a starter when the season starts. So what happens to the 4 teams that dont own a starter once the season starts... they will be short approx 350pts annually almost guaranteeing them a loss weekly. PROBLEM if managers cant acquire a goalie, and they are forced to lose those +350pts annually you'll potentially face a high turn over rate for managers fed up with the disparity since it takes anywhere from 1-5 yrs to wait for a goalie to mature and become an NHL starter + there are only 30 starting jobs in the NHL so a good prospect might never get a real shot to start in the foreseeable future. FANTASY, NOT LIKE REALITY i realize the league wants to mimic the NHL as much as possible but unlike the NHL, teams can decide to play a rookie goalie and start scoring points. OPTIONS have hockeyfreak6000 and Gilly already discussed this issue because it will lead to very uneven play. has the league considered ...
