SS 8/27/23

@zephyr22 the penalty on the Gomes release ($4.5m) puts your over cap by $2.9m. Please make a corresponding move to get your roster legal.

OK this is something I didn't realize would happen obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have released Gomes in this way.
How do you suggest I remedy this? By dropping a player? If I do that going by this I'll accrue another penalty and be further over the cap.
Genuinely would like some assistance with this.

OK, just read the rules regarding releasing players to refresh my memory.

"Any player dropped before the trade deadline still has part of his contract count against the cap in the following manner: Current year: 90%, Next year: 60%, All future years after: 30%.

If the player is dropped after the trade deadline, then the hit to the cap changes to 75%, 50%, 25%, respectively."

I read that as saying on this occasion as it's after the trade deadline 75% of Gomes contract will still count towards my cap, no mention of additional penalties being applied which increase my team salary and take me over the cap. If that's not the case the rules need to be clarified, unless I'm totally misinterpreting what I'm reading.

@zephyr22 you have the mechanics correct for the penalty, however there is one detail that has been missed: Gomes was signed through 2025, so there are penalties for 2024 and 2025 as well, and they would all need to be paid in 2023.

So 75/50/25 of $3m is $2.25+1.5+0.75=$4.5m total  $2m is $1.5+1+0.5=$4m total.

Ah right, here's the rule on that from the league rules

"The hit against the cap is rounded to the nearest $100,000. You can pay the cap hit by the years of the contract or all in 1-Yr"

So according to the rules I don't have to pay it all in one year, I can pay it over the length of the contract which should mean I stay under the cap, I've had cap hits in the past that have been spread over remaining years of the contract.

Also, not to be a pain in the ass, but Gomes was signed to $2m a year through 2025 not $3m

  • ldsjayhawk: @jwalker I make like 2-3 trades a year for each of my baseball teams, maybe.  I'll tell you part of the reason I don't trade.  Every trade discussion starts out with the other team wanting my top prospect regardless of what I am trading for.  I am not trading Jackson Holliday for your backup catcher who is going to play 20 games this year.

  • dbreer23: Agreed. I think the Devers deal in FGM is a good example of that. Devers gives SD some now (and future) pop, giving up substantial pieces to get him (Mayo, Keith, and one other).

  • Brent: Agreed.  I have Amon Ra St. Brown and Aiyuk because I traded JJ.  I couldn't have acquired a player like ASB where I was picking in the 1st so I down tiered at WR to make a trio of Chase, ASB and Aiyuk instead of JJ, Chase and fill in the blank.
  • ldsjayhawk: That is probably even more true in baseball since your drafts don't payoff for 5 years or so.  And I will admit my conservatism may be the reason I only have one championship here at ProFSL

  • Brent: I'm contemplating doing a complete tear down in NFL Live and rebuild.  Honestly, I probably should have postered for it to be this season.  I still might, but I would legit need to go into the draft with 3-4 top 10 picks/+ many others.
