Can I do 5 years then if I am reading correctly?
Sorry, I am still trying to understand this contract stuff.
Hard to figure out.
At 5 years, you'd have to pay him 8m per year for 5 years. Seems unlikely.
If you want him for 4 years, you'd have to bump his salary up to 5.5m per year.
So the sensible thing to do is just divide the 10m bid by 3, and give him 3 years at 3.4m per year...
Unless you think he'll be an absolute beast and take over Zetterberg or Datsyuk, in which case to give him 4 years, as mentioned, you'd have to give him 5.5m per year for those 4 years!
Just stick with status quo, and go 3 years at 3.4m per year kj!
Or to explain further:
<= $1.4m, 2 years
$1.5m - $5.4m, 3 years
$5.5m - $7.9m, 4 years
>=$8m, 5 years (the overall limit)
If the "per year" salary (final bid, divided by number of years... In your case it is 10m/3 = 3.4m per year ...) is up to 1.4m per year, the contract can only be 2 years.... In this case, you do not qualify.
If the "per year" salary is between 1.5-5.4m per year, the contract can only be 3 years. (As is the case with Justin Abdelkader here.. The 10m bid = 3.333, rounded up = 3.4m. 3.4m is between the 1.5-5.4m range, right? So he can be signed for 3.4m)
If the "per year salary is between 5.5m-7.9m, he can have a 4 year deal. So if the bid was 22m, he could be 4 years for 5.5m per year (22 divided by 4 = 5.5)
Anything over 8m per year equals a 5 year contract. Doesn't matter if the bid is 40m (40 divided by 5 = 8), or if the bid is like 80m (80 divided by 5 would be a 16m per year deal... unlikely, haha).
Hope that helps to clear things up, and helps your bidding activity and understanding!!

i need a contract issued for this player.
:DET-NHL: your on-going difficulty understanding FNHL contract guidelines is troubling after 9 months in the league.
this is the 4th contract you have submitted incorrectly.
OFFICIAL NOTICE: if this continues, we may as you to resign as the contract rules are being explained repeatedly now for this and other league rules.
